"Beauty" is what poets and artists alike pursue. We seek beauty not only in nature, art and philosophy, but also in our phones, clothes, furniture and... in gaming. We often value beauty above reason and try to surround ourselves with it. Our world is defined by the essence of beauty, and yet we try to define it. As the philosopher George Santayana noted in his 1896 book The Sense of Beauty, there is in us "a very radical and widespread tendency to observe beauty and to value it".
Philosophers like Santayana have tried to understand beauty for centuries, but today, after years of research, science is coming up with an explanation of its essence. And although it can't yet tell us what beauty is, it can tell us where it is, or where it isn't. There is no shortage of theories about what makes an object aesthetic. Ideas of proportion, harmony, symmetry, order, complexity and balance have been studied in depth by psychologists. These theories date back to 1876, in the early days of experimental psychology, when the German psychologist Gustav Fechner provided evidence that people observing shapes and images are guided by the so-called golden ratio (approximately 1.6:1). You can read how our brain perceives and understands beauty, and what the golden ratio is, in numerous scientific studies. But the conclusions are clear: we like nice things and we like to surround ourselves with them.
